Drum Majors - For Real ?

Over the past few months both Delphi Forums and PBF have had threads on the issue of drum majors.

On PBF not much can be said or "I'm a D/M from Northern Ireland" is likely to cut you off if she doesn't like what you say......

So what do you really think of them or D/M competitions?

I personally recall the days when they were worth a lot. Drum Majors both military and in civvie street were largely drummers in their own right who taught drumming. They were also the band quartermasters, ...

The Grade 1 Clan Gregor Society Pipe Band of Scotland has disbanded following a full band meeting several weeks after the group's entire drum section departed for the Grade 1 Fife Constabulary Pipe Band.

In a statement to pipes|drums, a band spokesman said, "Due to recent events, the Clan Gregor Society Pipe Band has decided to call it a day after an unsuccessful four-week search for a replacement drum corps."

Had our first practise back last night,

To be honest, i'm glad to get going again, nice to be learning some new material, although Glenn is a believer in the one tune at a time system

Probably wise too, as if you gave some of the 'P' artists in our outfit all the material, you probably wouldn't see them till New year

But on the whole, nice to get going, although its always hard to believe that the new season starts in 8 months.

Who else is back?

New Somme mural

Just leaving now to pipe at the unveiling of a new Somme memorial mural in East Belfast.

Will get some pic's and post them tomorrow, there might be some on the go, so a wont be home da put them up later....

Seen a wee peak preview of the blue print, and the artwork is something else, just hope the mural does it justice.

i'm writing an essay ins chool about pipebands, and i need some comparisons about how pipebands have changed over the years.

i'm looking for anything that will help me really

Was admitted to the Hospital last night with a Heart Attack!!!!

Just came off the phone with his wife Gillian and gave him a call at hospital , he is 'looking forward to a fair amount of tests'

but tired.

Ime sure you will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery!!!

Competition or Showmanship?

Over the past week I have watched many clips on various sites of Piping Live, The Worlds and Cowal.

I personally view Piping Live as a "showcase" event where bands can show to the public and also to the piping world just how far the pipes can be taken as a musical instrument. By "bands" I also include the drum corps in this.

I consider the Worlds and Cowal to be serious competitions where the "technicalities" of playing these instruments in the pipe band context ...
