.. Size of playing circle.

Post by stormy on Fri 4 Jul - 11:46:15

I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong but it is my understanding that the competing band should remain within the inner circle and the judges remain outwith the outer circle. Both these circles are clear in this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU7Sk2ijZ2I
Have the size of these circles been increased to accomodate the size of G1 bands?
Are the circles not an indication of the expected "numbers" in a competing band and if so are large G1 bands violating the rules?
I will be nice tomorrow. Today I'm much too busy.

I thought the circles were guidelines, the judges have to keep a certain distance from the bands when playing, dunno if theres a violtion there but it seems increasingly difficult for the G1 boys to keep in the small circle

Rules taken from the RSPBA.org website

Band Formation
3.49
In forming the circle, the Pipe Major and Leading Drummer may take up a
position within the circle to ensure the best performance from the
Band.

3.50 The Band circle is intended as a guide to Bands.

3.51 Adjudicators must not enter the outer circle.

Circle Size
3.52
The centre of the circle to be 14 metres from the start line. The Band
circle shall have a diameter of 8 metres and the Adjudicators’ circle
shall have a diameter of 14 metres.

I noticed at Birmingham one of the Grade 2 bands(cant remember the name0 who actually had the drum corps standing ON the outer circle with the pipe Corps on the far edge of the inner circle a sort of OVAL shape?

I would take it from your post Richard that "as a guide" the competing band should "more or less" be the size of the inner circle. The clip of the SLOT shows this quite nicely
Certain bands these days would have to stand at an angle with one pipers arm touching the back of the piper in front of him and the drummers forming a circle inside the pipers!!!!! laughing

Yeah it certainly seems that way John as long as they are close to the inner circle (Not That Kind !!!!!!) then they seem fine

Although as i posted elsewhere on the forum there are some bands that cant find any circle laughing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-96ob9Npm4E&feature=related

I've always been led to believe that the circle is a guide. Its damn near impossible to get most if not all grade 1 bands to have their feet on the line without them touching shoulders. Taking our band as an example, 21 pipers, 11 snares 5 tennors and a base, trying to fit that in to 8 metres would be a squeeze to say the least!! piper

I always understood it as a guide, and as Peter rightly says, getting Big bands in there is not easy,

Mind you, if it does get a bit cramped, all you do is stop playing, leaves more room for others,

Apparantly theres nothing in the rules about that either
