.. Clan Gregor fold

Post by orange_wings on Fri 3 Oct - 23:44:11

The Grade 1 Clan Gregor Society Pipe Band of Scotland has disbanded following a full band meeting several weeks after the group's entire drum section departed for the Grade 1 Fife Constabulary Pipe Band.

In a statement to pipes|drums, a band spokesman said, "Due to recent events, the Clan Gregor Society Pipe Band has decided to call it a day after an unsuccessful four-week search for a replacement drum corps."

Clan Gregor rose relatively quickly to Grade 1 after dominating Grade 2 in 2003. It had been a regular serious contender for prizes at major RSPBA championships. The band enjoyed its strongest competitive year in 2005 when it claimed sixth prizes at the Cowal and British Championships.

Clan Gregor won the Grade 1 Qualifier competition at the 2008 World Pipe Band Championships, and qualified for every Grade 1 World's Final since 2004.

Former Clan Gregor pipers have reportedly already joined other bands, and Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia is said to be a major beneficiary. Clan Grgeor's former pipe-major, George Shepherd, who left the band in 2006, recently took over as pipe-major of Dysart & Dundonald.

The demise of the band brings the total number of Scottish-based Grade 1 bands to nine, including the Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band, which has not yet revealed its future plans. The Grade 1 Tayside Police attended two championships in 2008.

The RSPBA will announce its grading recommendations for 2009 in October.

"The band would like to thank everybody for their support during this tough time, and we would especially like to thank the Clan Gregor Society who have supported us from start to finish," the Clan Gregor band spokesperson said.

*************************************************************************************************

Must say its pretty sad, they were a very good band, although, not the same when George Shepherd left they were still a decent outfit. It's a strange one though, they had offers of drum corps but turned every one of them away? Rather have a poor bottom end of the grade corp than none? Strange indeed but all the best to everyone who is now looking for a new band.

I Think its always sad to see a band fold, even if its one you dont like,(not in this case btw)

The sad thing is, that other bands are already scrounging the players,

Reading between the lines is always a difficult skill, but i think that there might be more to this than meets the eye, Clan lost their corps to Fife, i assume that the Fife corps will have to go somewhere, perhaps even to Clan, although as Peter says, offers of Drum corps have not managed to stop a closure

Or,

Is it just a case of too many players heading elsewhere, and no one feeling the need to keep a potentially bottom end G1 band on life support?

In the last year, Clan, Bleary, Ballinderry, Dysart( soon to be reborn) have all calved, Tayside have been there or thereabouts.

It beggars another question, how long can a band go on, whilst not getting prizes?

I have been very lucky in my band career, with regards to success, I reckon, I have won around half the contests I entered (in bands)

How long will bands go before they fold, Lower grades are more competitive, G1 is a a bit of a closed shop, and has been for years, although SLOT have got a toe in the door.

I'm not sure how long I would stay if we were not meeting realistic targets, I don't say winning, as every week in NI when Fm and SLOT go out( which is another thorny issue) is a major for us, we will not win, even if we were the best band, we still won't get it, so our targets have to be a bit different, and so far they have been met.

What is the general opinion? a year? two?

I dunno,

Cheers

Same thing happened many years to Lochaber Pipe Band (before grade 4 was split into A and B).. we were promoted to grade 3 then promptly disbanded....
Such a shame that these things happen.

Clunie takes over as new Tayside Police P-M Published Pipes/Drums: October 09, 2008

David Clunie David Clunie, leader of the Grade 1 Clan Gregor Society Pipe Band before its dissolution in early October, has been made Pipe-Major of the Grade 1 Tayside Police Pipe Band. Clunie replaces Terry Reid, who plans to stay with the band. According to Clunie, only "two or three" of the pipers who were with Clan Gregor reportedly will go with him to the Tayside Police. Clunie joins Ian Tobin, who was appointed Leading-Drummer last week. The two have been friends since they were members of the Bowhill & Seafield Pipe Band in the 1970s. "This post has only come about as a result of the demise of Clan Gregor which at the time was my first priority, to salvage the situation of losing the drum corps," Clunie stressed. "Only due to the irretrievable position of Clan Gregor have I accepted this new post and I would like to thank all of the Clan [Gregor] pipers for the commitment and effort over the years past and wish them every success in their future ventures." Clunie said that he is looking to establish Tayside Police as a contending Grade 1 band quickly. He said that the current roster of Tayside Police pipers remains intact.
