The Majors - my opinion Empty The Majors - my opinion

Post by Gordy88 Wed 22 Oct - 20:10:38

There has always been a lot of debate about the 5 majors, location etc, there is a thread on here at the moment too.

However,

I though it was time to have an informed discussion, albeit with the caveat that the competitions are bid for by particular locations.

THE WORLDS-, IMO, should always be held in Scotland, it is seen as the home of the GHB, and that should reflect in the placing of the worlds, not necessarily Glasgow, but definitely Scotland.

If the Aussies and North Americans don't like it, tough, As the British exported a large percentage of the founding fathers of these countries, it will be like a homecoming for them. Sorry to be blunt, but thats the way I see it, A few worlds wins does not qualify as a reason to host it, if so, it would spend a few years in NI first.

It should also be split between 2 days, Saturday and Sunday, on Saturday, grades Nov Juv and Juv, grade 4a and 4b, and 3 b could be held, and all the drum majors up to Senior. both Qualifying and finals. On Sunday, senior D/M, 3a, 2 and 1.

Tickets can be valid for both or either days, bands would not have to play at 9am, it is a nonsense to think that a player can give his best at that time of the day,

Travelling bands will know what day they are playing so travel is not an issue. Most Ulster bands travel on Thursday anyway, so 1 and 2 can travel Friday/Monday instead

SCOTTISH, - no Brainer, should always be in Scotland as well.

ALL IRELANDS - Should be a major, and alternate as now between North and South. There is a procedural problem here, as all Majors are run by Washington Street, and the IPBA don't want to give up their half. Fair enough I reckon, as they don't have much else.

However, I dont see this as a big Problem. The RSPBA no doubt will as they will only be getting half the revenue, but as my cunning plan revolves around 6 majors, they will, in fact, be better off, more money to waste on carpets, lol.

THE BRITISH - held anywhere in Britain on a rotating basis, ie, if you had it last year, you don't get it this year, Rotates between Scotland, Engerland, All of Ireland, and Wales if they have an interest.

EUROPEAN - Ditto British, rotating basis, bid on a few years in advance, a couple of years notice for the Continent would be nice, but with the home nations in the mix as well.

I'm afraid I would sacrifice the Cowal, I know it has its history and all that, but I, and a lot of others feel thats it has had its day.

That is 5 Majors, I would further propose a 6th Major, that could be hosted anywhere in the world on a bidding basis.

Call it what you like, Intercontinental Championships for example, it should be located at least 3 years in advance, that will allow fundraising as required.

It will not count towards the CoC, so bands can decide if it worth their while going, with proper promotion and sponsorship, the prize fund could be quite hefty, and it might even filter down to the bands!!!

Regardless, it would still be a very important contest, and the Aussie/ N Americans might find it easier to travel to, or even host.

Just my opinion of how things should go,

Hey Gordy, good shout m8
Cowal is a rubbish event and worse for lower grade bands who are treated like 2nd class citizens up the hill ,
'Yeah come to Cowal but you cant mingle with the real comp just you stay up the hill outah the way, oh yeah and its £8 to get in !!!!

A champions of the universe would be an interesting concept , dont know how long it would last though !!!!

All Irelands a Major i would deff go along with that m8 , would like to see a Scottish band crowned all ireland champion !!!! get it right up yeh laughing laughing laughing only jokin m8 ,
There are a load of great ideas out there but i only see 1 problem

I read all these discussions about the majors, with interest, and I always have the same thoughts.
1. If hypothetically, Australia and New Zealand put on a major event, even if only every 4 years, would bands actually attend. I would think it would be a hell of a lot more expensive, to travel from North America to here, than to Scotland.

2. More importantly, why is the Worlds opened to everyone? Wouldn't it be more effective, if only those that have placed, maybe the top 3 from each grade, in their regional Championships are eligible to play at the Worlds.
It would cost more for some bands, as you would have to compete at your own National event, and not just skip it and hop straight to Scotland. But wouldn't it be better for pipe bands in general, particularly in the lower grades?
You would have to work harder to get to the Worlds and it would give a reason for Regional associations to help support bands travelling to Scotland.
My 2 cents for what it 's worth.

Fair points Janelle,

I don't know about elsewhere, but here in Northern Ireland there has always been a 'must go to the Worlds atitude'

That fact that the band has been last at every competition is not a deterrent, as most of them make it a wives and girlfriends weekend

Err...........

And in some cases other peoples wives!! laughing

The date of the Scottish has yet to be decided for 2009
The organisors wanted to move it a week earlier due to local Holidays and not wanting to pay the minions overtime, the N.I and Irish reps at National Council were asked and said sure no problem , after the anouncement went out there were complaints (rightly so) from the Irish bands who had already made travel arangements , time off work etc, so its still up in the air !!! seems the N.I and irish reps need to talk to the respective bands !!! so its just the same as over here then lol

Have to agree with much of this.
THE WORLDS - Can be easily held over two days. The RSPBA have already held a competition at Bellahouston Park on the Sunday, the day after the Worlds on the Saturday. I have the medal for winning G1 at such a competition! It is not impossible.
SCOTTISH - Makes sense to hold it other than in Scotland.........NOT!
BRITISH - Could be held anywhere within what is commonly known as the British Isles. Isle of Barra??
EUROPEAN - Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Italy to name but a few all have pipe bands. Any of these countries should be approached about hosting the championships.
ALL IRELANDS - should be a Major at the expense of Cowal.
COWAL - Had it's day. Should no longer be considered as a Major.
INTERCONTINENTAL - IMHO - Should only consist of the top ten G1 bands. A major sponsor would be required as the sponsor would provide ALL travel and accomodation costs for competing the bands. The competition could (with a substantial sponsorship) be held anywhere in the world on a rotational basis.
