Charlie Rea R.I.P
Thought this would be an appropriate place to pay homage to Uncle Chuck (as he was affectionately known )
Charlie Rea, Charlie was without doubt a leader way before his time in the drumming techniques now taken for granted. Charlies forethoughts/visions to improve tenor/bass sections within pipe bands were frowned upon.
He started the ideas by removing the bottom head from the tenor drum, this was called, " his pinger ". Today this is the norm, if the corp doesn't have this it is frowned upon as lacking something lol.
Charlie also actually played the pinger, days of flourishing were gone in his eyes,it was time the tenor drum was used to embellish the snare scores and create an overall improved ensemble within the band.
However Charlies great enthusiasm for drumming was in teaching / helping out the lower grade bands, lets face it, he'd done it all and won it all. He wanted to give back some of his knowledge to the smaller bands.
This he done with great success winning the much sought after world drum corp title with Ballydonahy pipe band in grade 3 or 4 ( I'm not certain ).
The love of drumming kept going until the pain and suffering of cancer forced him to call it a day in February of this year.
The high regard in which Bobby and Charlie are held has been shown by the amount of phone calls I've received from people who have known Charlie throughout his long and successful time in the pipe band world.
There are representatives from bands such as St Laurence O'Tooles, Simon Fraser University, Strathclyde Police and the whole N.Ireland pipe band scene, even in the latter stages of his fight against cancer Bobby sat with Charlie running scores which are being used by SFU, by Charlie for his thoughts on their content.
The old Ayr pipe band also are going to be represent by the original PM oul Bob, and members from the Ayrshire branch.
There is indeed great sadness at this time, but also pride, pride in the fact that I was part of someones life who was a true sincere gentleman putting himself before others not once, but on many an occasion.
To uncle Chuck:- May the flowers of the forest forever be in bloom o'er yer head. R.I.P.......Y.N.W.A

Re: Charlie Rea R.I.P
I never met Uncle Chuck, but anyone who has achieved even a portion of what he did, deserves special mention. The fact that so many Band people are making the pilgrimage to be at his funertal, pays testament to the aura in which he was held.
Unfortunately at this time words are so insignificant, and apart from the fact that the World of Pipe bands has lost an amazing disciple, I know for a fact that you Iain are hurting inside. Our thoughts will be with you and Lorraine on Wednesday, and may the big man up above, give power to your Chanter as you play chuck on his homeward journey.
Rest in Peace Charlie, may your drum sound even sweeter amongst friends

I am sorry to hear of you loss, and of the loss to the pipe band world. It's a shame to lose a master, but it sounds like his legacy will live on in his teachings.
