Start of a long and successful reign.

These are amongst the first trophies ever won by the Robert Armstrong Memorial J.P Pipe Band. My father has an amazing collection of memoribilia dating back to the early 50's, programes and photo's. Some unfortunately never came out too well on the scanner for posting, but I will try 'n pick up some more.

This is where the Redneck entered the RAMS ranks, the rest as they say is history ( unfortunately wee Red was down the chickenpox when this was taken..awwwww. lol )

The PM on the left was Tommy Geddis ( the wee man as he was known ) beside him is the now grade1 judge Harry Stevenson jnr.
Front row, extreme right is P/Sgt Harry Stevenson snr, my tutor and mentor to whom I owe everything, beside Harry is the reason am sitting here the noo. Ma father Donald Snr.
Uncle Chuck ( recently passed away ) can be seen to the left of the bass drum.

This band and Armstrong bands after this era went on an amazing run of domination in grade2 winning promotion to grade1.

Here I'd like to pay tribute to what I believe was the main reason for our success, this may seem strange to some but I do believe this was the case.

St. Patrick's of Donnaghmore, this outfit pushed us to the limit week in and week out. They had a fantastic pipe corp under PM Shaun Faloon, Shaun stepped down to play in the corp as PM Tom Anderson came to try and help break the RAMS dominance.
This he achieved with a varying degree of success. However this pushed the wee man up to the next level, pipers from all over the north of Ireland wanted to be part of the RAMS success, players suh as Harry McAleer ( ex SPPB PM now deceased ) Enoch Kirk, Ricky Newel all great players in their own right and were the cream of the Irish solo circuit too.
The rivalry was rife, but friendly......no squabbles nor bad mouthing was ever evident, not like the bitching 'n slabbering of to-day. Bar rooms would be booked for celebrations afterwards, win loose or draw, sing alongs wi members playin guitars tin whistles everything really.St Pat's and ourselves would have great craic.
Why does this not happen now a days?.

Yes indeed an era long lost I'm afraid in today's piping scene, even to this day Terry Tully (SLOT), Brendan Murphy,Don Bradford (SPPB ) and Richard Parkes (FMM) all old friends still would talk about the wee man (Tommy Geddis) and the RAMS with affection, this in itself is indeed testamonie to the high regard in which a great band has been remembered.

Hope you enjoyed a little bit of what has made me tick, a very proud, sometimes sentimental member of a band that helped shape and raise the standard of piping in Ireland to what it is today.

Cheers.~~~Iain~~~

I tell you Iain, I was away back in the old day's with your reminiscing, brilliant to hear the old stories, and I know that your love of the Music is all down to your early learning. As you so rightly say the camaraderie of the old days is sadly missing from the competitions of today. No matter who won what or lost what, afterwards everyone was a friend, okay there was plenty of ribbing? but it was all given and taken in that brotherhood of piping spirit. happy days indeed.

So true Dave, and yes I am very proud of my father and Harry snr for all they done for me.
Yes I can act the goat 'n a like ( like lol ) a wee swallie, but when the chips are down there's a job to be done and I will still give it my all. Harry I know was very proud of my achivements in the solo's and as the last PM of the RAMS, musta been nice to see a raw student end up as PM of a band he was raised in.

My father even to this day waits for the call after the contests fer Drumlough's results, funny thing is he never gets 'em da the next day....am always cabbaged.... laughing laughing if he does get a call he knows were were 2nd.....thankfully he never got too many calls.

Thing is Dave even after all he's done, he STILL has the bug, my mum says once 7-8 o'clock comes 'n he hasn't heard from me on the results she says he gets so annoyed...hahaha. class.

I know exactly how your dad felt Iain, I was so into the loughs achievments last year myself, that come 6pm on a Saturday if I had not received a call from either you or Scottie, I was like a bear wi a sore heid. Mind you half the time i could not understand what was being said either by the noise of the bands in the background or as you say you were cabbaged? Laughing

Iain, I LOVE the pictures and the stories! Please keep them coming... and you other guys too!!

It's so different here. All the pipers I know started as adults... one of my bandmates started in her late 50's... she's been playing for 10 years now! So no one has any old pictures or memories to share.

How old were you when you started?

Heres One from Cowal in 1990, RUC pipe Band, the weekend I met the wife.

Thats me, the Rather handsome Pipe sergeant, But as with Redneck, when you look through the ranks you see a lot of Legends, Ian Jess was the Pipe Major, won the all ireland solos etc a pile of times, top player obviously,

Jimmy Johnstone ex Irish Guards PM, and Rab Cupples, who is now my PM is hiding at rear Left,

In the middle is davy 'juke box' Majury, who I think may have played in RAMS with Redneck

At the rear is Ronnie Irwin, one of the best players i have ever heard, who was unfortunate enough to have a lump blown out of his hand in a bomb. Still a class player.

Will keep the one with me in the buckled shoes for another time!!

On ye go stormy, Your turn.

Here's one from August this year,

Thats us coming off after our Worlds winning performance in Grade 2,

You will see a load of kids, 8 of this band are under 17 years old, and at least a couple of the pipers will be real stars.

Thats the big difference i see between now and then, there used to be a lot of big hairy men, now there are a lot of women and kids as well, which is really good for the movement, but is not so good when you're trying to tell some one a dirty joke!!

I actually remember watching you perform at the worlds Gordy, in fact just to the right of the gate as you come in, the tall good looking guy trying to hide under the umbrella, wearing the cape? thats yours truly?
I had been abandoned by all and sundry that day?(Another story) so just wandered here and there to watch whatever bands I wanted too, I remember clearly you going on, as i thought (from a distance) it was one of the junior Bands? I cant believe it, it is indeed a small world.

Sorry dai, I don't remember you,

But even if I did, I wouldn't have seen you as, I have started taking my glasses off when playing in the rain .

Works well from a concentration point of view, but I rely heavily on Michelle, the girl beside me in the front row to mutter 'Gordy Stop'!!

You are right, it is a creepily small world, especially in Pipe Bands, I think i'm right in saying Stormy played in SPPB in the late '80's, We would have been second to them about 10 times, and we did a couple of jobs together too, they were a machine then, but is is a small world.

Cheers,

You have it correct regards Stormy, i was with the old Glasgow police band, shall we say a "few" years before Stormy, and dont believe him when he says, he was not even born when I played(he was, okay probably only just?)
And i would not have expected you to know me? for a start i was ujnder an umbrella hel by quiet a pretty lady, who i did not know? plus I had a McCallum bagpipes hat drookit and hanging over my eyes?
