Re: somebody at the wind up???
Was just about to post that myself Robbie.
There'll be quite a few PM's rubbing their hands wi delight.....Ach they'll say the usual fookin' crap 'n go along wi the media hype..... " Oh,...that's shocking"........ whilst deep down they are sayin' thank fook.
Don has this band sounding 'n playing the best they have been in the last 5-6 yrs, the whole outfit must be gutted.
Big, big, loss to the Pipe band world, knowing Don it won't be too long until he's out again.
Hope this can be resolved, if not, good luck to all ma pals in the band. Thanks for all the good times guys.

Re: somebody at the wind up???
Oh dear oh dear. I never thought I would ever see summit like this happening! On 1 hand I can see what the big wigs are saying, but that doesnt make it right!! The band could stay alive and still compete at the top level with a bit thought! All members could have their shifts done so they can attend practises, now the article said they would be only out for 2 majors, now no top flight piper would do that so why done they put in for days off? Now before ya all jump on ma back think long and hard before ya stick the boot in!!!! We do it, the FMM etc do it so whats the problem with the police doing this? That would be an ideal situation if the article reads correct and hopefully travisty avoided! If not then its as redneck said there will be PM's out there rubbing their hands, and good luck to all the players!! Ill even show them the way to the burgh!!!

Re: somebody at the wind up???
while i go along with what you say Scots - all you need is lack of support from bosses within, and if its like L&B there were bosses that went out their way to allocate shifts and transfers so policemen couldnt make engagements or infact comps - they saw it as a hinderance for whatever section of police the player was in and showed no support for the band - only support for the figures and targets they have to acheive !!!!

Re: somebody at the wind up???
I first heard about this 3 weeks ago at my retirement night.
It's an absolutely disgraceful and outrageous decision by senior officers who are no more than politicians in uniform.

Re: somebody at the wind up???
This is devastating news and I hope for all concerned that they can come to an arrangement to keep the band going. I have enjoyed competing against the guys and having a bit of banter at the rugby etc. with them. They are decent guys who all enjoy pipe bands the same as us why should that be taking away from them after all the work that's been put in to get the band where it is today.

Re: somebody at the wind up???
I couldnt agree more with the posts on this thread but we must remember that most of them are police officers and its unfortunate but they are pipers 2nd. I still maitain with a little common sense applied an ideal situation can be sought. I dont want to see the band slip away into our memories but to step up and be in our faces lifting prizes again. I do hope the powers that be can sit down and find an amicable solution to this.

When Govan Burgh Police Pipe Band came into being an Act of Parliament was used. The Chief Constable of Strathclyde has no power (as far as I know) to remove what is now Strathclyde Police Pipe Band from the scene. That would take either an amendment to the original Act or a new Act to do so.
He does have the power to deploy his Officers as he sees fit, as does the Divisional Commander.
Between them, they cannot get rid of the band but can make it so awkward that the serving officers find it difficult, if not impossible, to attend practices or engagements thereby making the band slowly disappear from the scene but still officially in existence.
This is a "back door" and underhand means of getting rid of something for which certain senior officers have no personal interest. They are putting their own and political interest first at the expense of one of the best assets the force has not only of local value but Nationally and Internationally.
Fight this management decision with tooth and nail. E-mail AND write to -
The Chief Constable,
Strathclyde Police,
173, Pitt Street,
Glasgow
and also to -
The Divisional Commander,
"A" Division HQ,
Stewart Street,
Glasgow
and let them know the feelings of the pipe band world.
In 1982 I was given the opportunity along with the late Bob Edmiston (tenor drummer) to research the history of the band for the 1983 Centenary celebrations. Our findings formed the basis for the history page on the bands website. The SPPB is more than another pipe band and is more than just another police unit. It is an institution in it's own right, known throughout the world and cannot be allowed to die because of one or two people.

Re: somebody at the wind up???
I fully agree with the sentiments on here, and what is being said throughout the PB world,
However, being an old cynic, a few thoughts come to mind,
What is being said, and what is being thought, may be slightly different, some bands and PM's might well be thinking about grabbing players, or If SPPB are away it leaves a slot in the top 6 up for grabs. looking after Number 1. its called
I dont believe for a moment that emails and calls will do any good at all. The decision will not change. And the reason is simple, many senior police officers in my experience have big ego's, and you can take my word that their ego is often much larger than their ability, but when they make a decison like this, they will not change it, because they will look weak, foolish, and that they cant stand by the decisions they make. The SP Chief Con perhaps has his eye on a post like Met deputy Commisioner, backing down will not help that become reality.
Because of this, I cant see a reversal.
Having spent many years in a police band, I know how handy it is not having to worry about annual leave, getting off work for contests etc, travel all taken care of, all that sort of thing.
I dont see what is to stop the band carrying on, but they would have to take leave etc, and fork out a lot more for travel etc. The same as the rest of us in fact, or at least every band outwith Police and Military bands. The problems will arise when a few members start to think why should we represent Strathclyde Police when they wont support us? A valid point IMO
How it will pan out is beyond my ken, but one thing is for sure, the RSPBA will be a lesser place if SPPB cease to exist as a top competition band.
cheers
