.. Canning Reeds

Post by bondy on Sat 1 Dec - 13:11:58

Pint I have just got a set of Ryan Cannings drone reeds and have to say I am very impressed with them the tenors are nicely balanced and very easy to work with. The real bonus though is the bass reed it is easily the closest thing I have ever played to cane giving a full robust tone in my Grainger and Campbells which have in the past proved very tricky to reed. ( great sounding pipe when properly set just akward) Just for the record I am not employed by Ryan, like I say the bass is awesome the tenors on a par or slightly better than anything else. IMHO the bass is better than the cane crozier bass.

Correct me if I'm wrong Bondy, but isn't the main body of the reed the same makeup as the M&G's ( composite ), this newer material is where I think the secret lies. Rather than pure Tupperware this new material has not the same, but very close to a natural substance.

Good on yee m8, glad yer happy wi the reeds. The bass, closest is not good enough..... laughing , Al stick da the real thing.

Your right they are allmade of some funky tupperware, the bass is now elevated to brill started double toning and with a wee fiddle hear and there it is as good as the cane reeds i have heard. The main thing is to be happy with the sound of your pipes if hat is cane/tupperware combination don't really matter. I would however give the cannings a bash if you are looking for reeds, tenors are good too!!

yes about 2 weeks or so and it is tuning up a bit but sound nice. I am thinking about opening it just a hair to try and get a slightly more powerful sound. The only doubt is the pipes are balanced nicely catch 22 really. Still it is fun trying to get the perfect sound! IMO they are prob the best tupperware reeds really easy to work with and great sounding. Also Ryan will custom make a set if you find they tune too low etc. Nice to get the personal touch and an autographed music book too boot LOL
