FUSION!!!
Let's start off another thread where our True Blue Piper can jump up, scream and yell and generally raise havoc about the evolution of pipe band music.
The topic, for those of you who can read the subject line is "Fusion", the blending of the pipe band sound, impressive percussion included, with all sorts of other instruments and in a variety of styles of music.
Do you love it, hate it or not give a damn one way or the other? What styles do you like? Which bands do it best? Any particular album that comes to mind?
I love it in most cases, I like the fusion of classical and orchestral music with the pipes, sometimes rock. There are several that do a great job of it, but my vote for today goes to the Vic Police, all three of their albums that I have. There are some great pieces on all of them. But the 78th Fraser's have some nice stuff, so does SLOT, FMM... where does the list end? And then there's that great little collection of radicals, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, followed closely by the Red Hot Chile Pipers (aka Andes Highlanders)!

Re: FUSION!!!
From pure entertainment aspects the bands/artists you mentioned do all improvise pipes wi other instruments fer their CONCERT pieces superbly well.
My main choice would also be Vickki polis, the first track on MASTER BLASTER is superb.
Scottish and Irish traditional music is my favourite for blending/incorporating pipes 'n other instruments.

Re: FUSION!!!
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that they should play them at the Worlds or anything, I just neglected to mention concerts.
I'm listening to that track now, Iain, the reel set. It's great how it starts off so simply and grows.
Scottish and Irish music does lend itself to fusion with pipes very well, but so do others. I have a really neat recording of some of our pipers performing Waly Waly with the Army concert band here in Santiago. That's the same band that was in the Tatoo last year.

Re: FUSION!!!
A Good thread,
I have no problem with it in the right environment, concerts and shows etc.
Definitly not for contests and within reason as regards the instruments used.
Organ, accordian fiddle, guitar even,
But not things like the huge xylophone thing you see on american high school bands!!!
Cheers

I LOVE that recording! It is absolutely beautiful!
I have very little experience listening to fusion, but I do have two Victoria Police albums and love them, especially that first track of MasterBlasters. Lately though, I've been playing Top Deck in Perth over and over, since I'm learning it. ;)

Re: FUSION!!!
I know that Redneck will disagree intensly, however if there was a record I really, really hated....it was CelticRoots by Polkemmet....a shock that Ronnie Lawrie....would have allowed that sort of thing LOL
But no, I actually like some of the fusion stuff (though not a lot).....and I have to agree with the above posts....re. the Vic Polis and Masterblasters....the first track really is very, very good.
I posted somewhere else that I'd lost my Carlos Nunez recordings....well there's someone who's fusion music is utterly superb....different instruments, incorporating Galician, Breton, Scots and Irish music. I just hope that sometime inthe future I'll actually get to a concert to see him live.
As for the Red Hot Chilli Pipers....yeh.....don't mind it. Some of it gets the old feet tapping....although I don't think they're all they're hyped up to be. Is that sacrilege ?
Does that count for jumping up, screaming, yelling and generally raising havoc lol......

Re: FUSION!!!
When "fusion" is mentioned I do not tend to think of pipe bands. I cannot think of any pipe band that has "fused" in the way that the original post suggests. If there is any band which could come close to this "fusion" I would suggest that it is the RSDG. They have a new album coming out soon (although most is just a different version of what they have recorded in the past) and have recently signed a multimillion pound deal with a record company. This has been highlighted in the Scottish press last week.
Davy Spillane has used the Irish pipes to great effect (The Storm), and I believe he was the original player for Riverdance. Many traditional folk groups also use the pipes in various forms (GHB, Smallpipes, Northumbrian pipes etc), and I supose that this is fusion to a certain extent.
For true fusion I would suggest that you listen to the Afro Celt Sound System. A true fusion of Celtic music with traditional African rhythm.
I do not think that playing the pipes with different instrument is in itself "fusion".

What would you call it then ?. We beg to differ here m8, the bringing together of two diffrent things IMO is a fusion between both.
Taking the GHB out of the traditional set up of bands 'n solo piping and amalgamating it with other instruments to me is infusing it into something not normally being the norm for that instrument, hence--fusion.
Celtic music 'n African rhythm is no different.......Celtic music-(bagpipes) + African Rhythm-( tree trunks 'n drums)= fusion of two different things, same as GHB+other instrument = fusion.
Just my opinion. :D

Re: FUSION!!!
I'm taking "fusion" to mean one form of music / rhythm to "fuse" with the other.
I used to have a recording of the Battlefield Band playing Bluegrass using the bagpipes.
I do not take "fusion" to mean any particular Instrument playing with another.
We all know that with experience and some simple music theory the GHB can be played
with other insrtuments.
"Fusion" for me is the "style / genre" of music.
Make any sense or have I dug a hole for masel ???

Re: FUSION!!!
Well then there seems to be two interpretations on this one, if not fusion, then how about the amalgamation of the GHB with other instruments?.......a knew what David meant anyhow. Maybe this terminology wid suit the thread better?.

I agree with Stormy on this.
Also, prior to Bands being formed, it would be easy to imagine Pipes being played at private functions/family gatherings with other instruments.
Fusion, as I interpret it, is a mix of genres. My favourite is Rock and Bagpipe Music, although I recently heard somwewhere, a mix of Reggae and Pipes which was interesting. Something I would have to hear more of to decide if I actually like it.

Re: FUSION!!!
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fusion
Fusion is a noun so can be used as such i.e joining 2 of anything together, it can be 2 instruments or 2 styles of music but i think its commonly used as describing 2 styles of music together,
Ether way its an aquired taste one ive not yet really enjoyed but maybe ime not Kool Kat enough !!
I heard an advertisement for the RHCP new album and i thought whata lot of yucky broon stuff!!! they have gone too far over, trying to find modern popular tunes that will fit on the Bagpipe Scale without really asking if its a good tune, but good luck to them cause they are taking bagpipes to the masses just a pity they are leaving the traditional music behind. I can see it all in the future istead of the drunk at cowal shouting for the Black Bear it will be the drunk at cowal shouting for we will rock you !!!
Jees ahm getting old!!!
Ah i have an idea for a new thread !!!!

You're all wrong......
Fusion is when you have one Ipod playing John D Burgess...with earphone in your right ear and another Ipod playing Bob Marley with earphone in your left ear. The result : -
M : John MacColl's Shot The Sherriff
S : The Caledonian Revolution
R : Mrs MacPherson No Cry
