.. Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band

Post by wee_fee-Fee on Wed 16 Apr - 21:30:52

The pipes might be calling, but a $32,000 funding shortfall means the Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band won't be answering.

Members of the seven-times New Zealand champion group had hoped to reach the top six at the world championships in Glasgow, Scotland, in August. The band came ninth last year.
Flights were booked and accommodation was waiting on a deposit.
But this week the band officially cancelled the trip after $32,000 in funds was cut in Palmerston North City Council's draft annual plan.
The funding had been set out in the council's long-term council community plan, but was axed as part of cost-saving measures to keep the rates hike to 12 percent.
Band manager Grant Ogilvie said it was incredibly disappointing for the band, which took out its seventh national title last month.
Since 2001, every time the band has competed in the nationals, it has come out on top.
"We were riding high on our successes and it's a big knock to the morale of the band. We went into shock virtually."
The news had also had a big financial impact on individual members who had paid their own fares to Scotland. They had now lost thousands through cancellation fees.
While the band could have appealed the decision through the annual plan submissions process, that was not a viable option because it needed certainty, he said.
The council funding was tagged for transporting the large drums and accommodation costs, which had required a [PndStlg]4000 deposit (about $10,000) by the end of last month.
It was not worth gambling with that much cash for a maybe, Mr Ogilvie said.
"We couldn't take the risk of losing another 4000 by way of accommodation deposits on the off- chance that we might get some, or all, of the grant reinstated."
Mayor Jono Naylor said it was "unfortunate" the band would not be attending the competition, but it was a year in which the council had to make tough choices.
"Something has to give if we're going to get the council expenditure under control."
All funding had to be carefully weighed.
"That $32,000 is for a group of people to go and compete overseas. It doesn't actually affect the ongoing viability of the band's existence.
"We'd all like to have everything happen, but none of us wants to pay for it."
Mr Ogilvie said he understood the council was in a tight financial spot and had to cut back.
"We are definitely going again in 2009, come hell or high water."
This year should have marked the Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band's sixth trip to the world championships, where it had hoped to break into the top six for the first time.

The band had been steadily improving its ranking in recent years.

Always sad to hear this, but funding is a major issue,

There is a post of mine on here somewhere, approximating the costs of Northern Ireland bands, they get frightening very quickly, and we are only running to Scotland.

13,000 miles travel is always going to be a massive problem

Have also heard that Australia Highlanders could be out of the worlds too

cheers

Interesting comment, that. I wonder how many of the young members will be content to keep winning the local championship year after year and not have a chance at the worlds after progressing so far in such a short time? Maybe they will indeed become a feeder band for FMM and a few others.

I don't believe that will be an issue with the local competition being so strong plus easy access to the Australian competition. Besides didn't they say they're already planning alternative funding for next year.
Quite a few of them play with other bands and only play with Manawatu for the big comps, don't they?

Manawatu are made up of a development band, grade 2 band and grade 1 band. The grade 3 band being the step to develop the players up to grade 1 standard. I don't see the other members playing with another band unless it is non competitive. If its any thing like over here we cannot register with two competing bands. Once we leave a competing band we have to obtain our release form and re-register with the new band. If you are seen to be competing for a band which you are not registered for the band could risk being disqualified from the competition.

They are not going to be a feeder band for FMM

Simple answer is, FM have the pick of most of the top players in the world anyway, and Parkes is particular about who he takes and rejects.

People come to him from all over the world to audition for the band

Nearly every band in the world is a feeder for them.

St kilda will be sick about it, Major sponsorship not getting exposure at the worlds, but tough luck on them

Pity about this year for Manawatu, but they have a Good run to 2009 to get funds in place

cheers

Grade 3 band had a very successful year New Zealand Pipe Band Nationals(2008), Coming 2nd overal in grade 3. They got 2nd in the msr 2nd in the medley and 1st in the street march. The best band was Warnambool and district (an Australian Band) so they are basically the top grade 3 band in New Zealand. They were promoted to grade 2 they have a really good development program going on and some more members (of the development program) going into the No2 band.

Of course you're right Fee, you can only be registered with one band at a time.
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was thinking of the Grade 1 band. One of their snare drummers plays with Qld Police, who of course don't compete. I was told once that a few are like that. Don't know?
