Helpfull Post??
White hose.
From my mid teens (mid 1960's) I have worn white or cream coloured socks with my kilt. For me that is the norm.
SPPB decided a few years ago to go with a dark blue sock as part of their uniform. A bad choice in my opinion.
It now seems to me that every band wears dark coloured socks, no matter the tartan they wear.
Is this good or bad and are the "polis" to blame in any way for this "change" in standard of dress?

Re: White hose.
I have to agree with you stormy, my old band (allow bowmar) used to wear cream socks, i liked them. Then some smart ar*e decided black would be a good idea. We have no black in our kilt and IMO they look quite ugly and un-appealing.
Now im with denny however we wear white socks, i like them alot.
I'm not sure if SPPB are to blame, but i think they might have had something to do with it.

Re: White hose.
I remember reading in a paper a couple of years ago that you should never wear white socks with a kilt or else you'll end up looking like a piper! I've worn white socks since I started piping and that doesn't look like that'll change anytime soon either. A pipe band not far from me wears a red kilt with red wool socks. Doesn't look great in my opinion. Good to see you back posting Stormy.

No, the 'Polis' are not to blame, solo players have been doing it for years, I think the polis were the first band to do it though. I think it looks good with some kilts but not all, We couldn't get away with dark socks in Boghall the same as Torphican are not getting away with it! Lanark & District are not pulling it off either... the list goes on!

Re: White hose.
Coloured hose go well with some outfits, less so with others.
I've always had several pairs of hose, lovat blue, green, cream and white. The ones I hate seeing bands wearing are these really, really pure white hose....yeugh.
Maybe we should bring back full clan hose with buckled shoes, balmorals and frilly jabots....then again.....remember that photo of Redneck....

I can remember when everyone here wore tartan hose, then it was all cream or white.
I think the 'polis' may be responsible for a change in look, at least in lower grades. What happens in G1 eventually filters down to the lower grades and it won't be long before the "private school look" is more common in places like Australia, which is better than the budget poly lycra rubbish we are wearing at the moment.

Re: White hose.
We've recently changed from white hose to charcoal. I don't mind the colour, it's the hose themselves I have a problem with. If you aren't a chicken-legged boy they don't fit. Even though mine are a men's US 9 They needed to be stretched before they fit anyone's calves. Had we known that we woulda stuck with the white...

Re: White hose.
I wear coloured socks as well in the band, the band has worn coloured socks since day one (when the band was the 52nds and if i remember before the Polis decided to wear them). They go with the kilt and the shirt though. It makes a change the coloured socks instead of a sea of white legs during a march past (yuch).
