Rememberance day
Just got home tonight from 4 different rehearsals for remembrance day parades...........cold, soaked da the skin 'n generally pissssed aff.
Why do I let maself get talked inda these things?.
Why?........I'll tell you why, just as these thoughts were going through my mind I recalled the images on my desktop.........the 36th Ulster Division going over the top. They too were soaked, cold, injured, pissed aff 'n fed up too..............the big difference was they were in the middle of a battle field.
Iain, stop bein' a wimp..........this is why you and others like you do it.......to remember all the fallen from both world wars and all those in the present day campaigns against terrorism.
So tomorrow at 11am have a moments reflection and give thanks to those brave men and women past and present who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can hope to live a life free from tyrants 'n terrorism.

Re: Rememberance day
Ian thanks for that reminder of what we are doing. I am doing my third "Veterans Day" parade. I have participated in all since coming up on the pipes. I make sure and have the day off from work since we always celebrate by kicking off the parade at 11:11 am on 11/11 to celebrate the signing of the armistice from WW I.
I will be out tomorrow practicing and playing for the fallen ones at 11:00 am EST.

Re: Rememberance day
Good shout Iain
Ive got the band playing the parade from 10.30 , doin the solo spot at the laying of the wreaths, then its the march back to the legion to play again for them, It never seems to be as cold as i think its always going to be, at least we can warm ourselves up !!!!
From a band management point of view its not only what they have done for us , but what they still do for us !!
As a Legion Band we get the practice hall for nothing all year , get our coaches paid to all our comps , There is not a lot of organisations that give so much for so little in return !!!!

Re: Rememberance day
Totally agree with u all....
many many years ago when i playing in Lochaber Pipe Band, we played in the town centre then taken to the Imperial Hotel for a meal then up to Spean Bridge by coach to the war memorial and boy was that cold....up on a hill and open to the wilderness,,,,,,have never felt so cold in my life
this year will seem quite poingnant as it is now just over a year since my oldest son lost his best mate in Iraq...

Re: Rememberance day
Thanks folks, I wasn't posting this as a look at me 'n what I'm doin' post, but as you all said what we all do via our own musical skills adds that final touch to a moment in our history that allows everyone may they be military or civilian to show our thanks and remember the sacrifice they all gave.
Good luck to everyone tomorrow doing their bit on this very somber day.
Best a luck to da ma mate Richard in his first official outing as PM of Prestonpans, indeed Richard you are in a very strong position with the RBL and as you say not many bands can have the facilities that are at your disposal.
The RBL deserves / needs all the support they can muster, not just on this day, but all year round. The work they do is never seen nor heard about unless you are directly involved, so any time yer out 'n about 'n ya see a collection box, dig deep.

Re: Rememberance day
I'll be out tomorrow, as a drummer for the first year. I may be young, but since 3 generations of my family were lost within a week back then, i do understand what it means. The war to end all wars? Aye, right!

Janelles hubby John, posted this link on our forum, I thought it very poignant, so thought you would like to see it. It may make some think.
