Sheepskin bag advice Empty Sheepskin bag advice

Post by Gordy88 Sun 15 Feb - 15:41:27

Need some advice on picking a sheepskin bag.

Back in the dark ages I only ever used a hide bag Made by a man in Comber Co. Down called Sammy Boyce, A gentleman of the highest order, whose value to Pipe bands in NI over the years is without doubt.

When I came back to the game it was with a plastic set up.

Lasy year on moving to Ballycoan, I moved to a sheepskin, which was my first.

It went on in mid March, and was scrap after the worlds, still airtight, but not absorbing moisture, reeds werre wetting very quickly. 5 months out of a bag at 130 quid is pretty shabby IMO, if it was an item from Currys I would being wanting a refund

Have looked at the Bennett Goat skin, but have doubts, although its advertised as being more absorbant.

We have a batch of Bags in transit, So how do you pick the best of them, what do you look for in the hide, or what should I avoid

Other guys in the band have had the same problem, I used to get 2/3 years from a hide bag easily

Cheers

From Begg,s Pipe Bags

Peter should be able to confirm this but i think the band who cant be mentioned get the bags from Begg

What Should a Good Bag look like?

  1. It should have good all round thickness with no extremes of thickness.

  2. Stitching
approximately 4 to the inch in sheepskin and 4 to 5 in cowhide. Each
bag will not is exactly the same and it is up to the bagmakers
judgement and feel as to what is best. The stitching must be straight.

  3. Avoid skins which are very poorly marked on the out side although some natural flesh marks are possible.

  4. The
important part is the inside of the skin (hair side) and this is where
you have to trust that the bagmaker has done a good job and checked it
    for damage ie pinholes scaring.

The skins used go through a very rigorous
selection process. The sheep in particular have to be finely graded as
size skin and damage make many unusable. Many thousands are sorted to
be left with only the best. The type of skin is also important with
sheep from Norway, Iceland and Britain all being used. The tanning
process is also crucial to the skin.

We use alum as a tanning agent for sheep and chrome for the
cows. There are many processes to go through until it the skin is fully
cured. It is in fact a bit like baking a cake. In both cases the end
result is always slightly different. It is usually desirable to have a
slightly greasy feel. The main thing is to let the skin breath. The
tanning process is quite complex and takes quite a bit of explanation
but James Begg keeps a close eye on it so that a high standard is
maintained.

How long should a Skin last?

This will vary from piper to piper but on average 1 to 2 years for
sheep and 3 to 4 for cow Bags will be able to be used for a long time
after this period but from a hygiene and tonal point of view it is
advised to change them.

Do Leather Bags smell?! Of course they dont.

Leather is a beautiful material. Its soft, tough natural, pleasant
to work with can not be copied and has been around since the beginning
of time. It will only smell if kept too long or is badly looked after.
If some one says their bag smells - you now know why. Leather is
certainly more appealing than metal clamps o - rings and cat litter.

What type of Bag should I use?

Cow -for very hot climate where you want to retain moisture or when piper does not play on a regular basis.

Sheep - for absorbing moisture sheepskin is unbeatable - needs a bit of maintenance but its very straight forward.

Bag making is a craft and not an exact science. You need
patience, knowledge of piping and plenty of practice to be good at it.
Having made the bag it is also crucial to have it well fitted and this
is where the success of the Begg bag has come from. Its not just being
competent at one stage but putting all of them together to create the
perfect bag; time and time again.

Yip..its a problem...now that a lot of bands are going back to "sheepskin" and cane reeds...maybe the bag is getting hammered..!! with all the practicing...and playing at competitions most weekends...or have we lost the art of keeping a sheepskin in top condition...just like most young players have never seen a real cane reed and don't know the wee tricks getting them going and keeping them going...seasoning was in the old days the big secret..Edcath,Lawries ,Hardies..all had their own brew..and if you can remember Discount Highland Supply in Edinburgh(now sadly gone) had a liquid substance, that smelled lovely...and was always very good..I have a set of new nickel silver..pipes..(Macallums) that came with a Gortex bag...when you finished playing the whole instrument just falls off your shoulder..!! so I have been toying with the idea of a hide Bannatyne,,Zipper...just like to be able to get access inside for cleaning etc..(anybody experienced them.?.!!)to hold the weight of these pipes...I do feel that at £140...the sheepskin bag should last longer than 5 months...or have we been spoiled by the Gortex...?

Go fer it m8, we have just kitted out the complete band wi the Bannatyne Hide zipper ( bottom zip ) and the new MCS........a big thumbs up.

The feel of a real skin bag, good control / cut off's and strike in. Sits well under the arm and gives you total control of chanter position.

10/10 excellent product ( even if it is a modern invention lol )

I was given a quick look round the factory the other week and was impressed. Again im like redneck and raised the macalister way, sheepskin and cane reeds. But these bags are quite simply superb I havnt got 1 yet but I was after the look round going to buy the system, but when bannatynes heard what bend I was in they told me not to buy 1 as my new band supply them. Now thats pretty damn good service they could have easily have not said owt and took my £150.
