A non-forum friend and I were talking the other day about the Gordon Highlanders, and he asked me to ask y'all this question...

"Why do (or now it would be "did" since they are amalgamated into one giant 'super-regiment') the Scottish regimental pipe bands wear diced hose that didn't match the colors of their kilts? i.e. the Gordon Highlanders wore red and white diced hose with their dark green kilts. Does the dicing have some significance or mean anything?"

No idea....but the Gordons didn't always wear red and white...they used to wear red and black.

Just as the Scots Guards and the QOH wear / wore red and green.

Maybe it's because there was no "Queer Eye for The Straight Guy" back then.....they just didn't know how to accessorise......

I am not positive, but wasn't it something to do with battle honours? and Queen somebody or other said they should wear this dicing? as I say I am not sure, but I vaguely remember this story being told, But then again certain people will suggest that the sands of time have fogged my ancient memory??

It's not just the military, even today the Royal Scottish Pipers Society wear as a "badge" green and white diced hose.....which looks fairly strange especially so with those that are wearing predominently blue tartans.
