78th versus Strathclyde
I was just thinking today how superior the SL 78th Fraser Highlanders are to the Strathclyde Police. I would pit them against each other any day. Any thoughts?

Looking at the final placings at the worlds last year there wasnt much to seperate them but it looked as though SPBP were doing the tying there

Re: 78th versus Strathclyde
No person is superior to me and no band is superior to another.
There are of course some people who are better than me and in my job there are some who are senior in rank to me(but not better!).
There must then be some bands who are better or senior in some respect to others.
The 78th have their own particular style and I'm sorry but it is not one to which I am particularly taken with.
The video of them in the vids section of these forums playing their new selection only makes me believe once again that they are frightened of straightforward "breaks" between tunes and would rather try and hide this by playing short wee "scales or chords" to build up to the next set tempo.
Without being biased ( ) it's the polis way ahead by far.
BTW. 1987 was a fix but I just don't have enough to prove it!

Frightened of straightforward breaks? WTF, ya ever heard some a the players in that band?.
Gotta disagree wi ya there on this one. There's no difference between a bridgin' break ( wi fancy scales, as you put it ) and the straight break as in the MSR. No matter what note you finish on be it via a bridge break or normal break the tempos will ( or should ) be no different, I think you'll find most, not all, bridgin' breaks will be of the tempo the break is leading into.
So, IMO the break is immaterial a break is a break, good or bad from any note. Just because it was that way doesn't mean it's the way it should be, for all the innovative musical compositions around today, the standard MSR construction will always remain, ya tellin' me the 78th's can't play an MSR?.
Disagreement No2............1987 was a fix?......... 'nough said, I've said it before 'n al say it again.......the time they won the worlds they won it hands down. Prior to the worlds they done the concert here in Ballymena, I was fortunate then to be back stage for the warm up and end of concert pints.
Never have I heard a band so closely nit or sound as steady with volume and fer then a good pitch, am not windin' ya up m8.........like yerself a speak my mind, even the great 6 in a row band wouldn't a counted.
Credit where credit is due.
